The Charlotte 500, Lap 11: Scattered, Smothered, Covered, or Chunked?

You'd think that once you've seen one Waffle House, you've seen them all. This Southern institution of the interstate is like McDonalds in that way - they all look the same, inside and out. But, every once in a while, you come across one that's different, and the Waffle House on Catawba Avenue in Cornelius is that one. The inside is all the same; so is the menu. But the exterior is much different - nicer - than the typical Waffle House, and that's why we call this one the Nice Waffle House. Remember, though, before you slip on your wingtips and knot your tie, it is still a Waffle House - good waffles, eggs, sausage (and, now, flavored sodas!! I was so excited, I had a cranberry coke with my All Star Special breakfast) - but not much else in the way of comfort and coziness.

There was also a great selection of music on the jukebox, including some songs about Waffle House, some of which you can buy on-line. Wonderfully enough, the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man" came on during our breakfast. If any song is a Waffle House song, it's "Ramblin' Man."
Before you laugh, check out these fun facts about Waffle House. They really do have some impressive numbers.

Did they have "The Guy Who Changes the Lightbulbs"?

That's the only Waffle House song I know. The lyrics can be found here:

So we were on our way to Florida for Christmas, driving ON CHRISTMAS DAY. Waffle House was the ONLY place open so everyone in the state of Georgia was waiting in line to eat. We waited forever because we were hungry and were finally seated next to the food-preparation section. Which wouldn't have been so bad except the waitress kept sneezing and coughing into the food and carrying a wadded-up Kleenex.

Ooh. Your people correspondent has the latest WH news for you:
Kid Rock has been arrested in Atlanta in connection with a fight at a waffle house, the city's FOX 5 News is reporting.

Rock (real name: Bob Ritchie), 36, who played a sold-out show Saturday night in Atlanta, and five members of his entourage were taken into custody facing a misdemeanor charge of simple battery.

Police say Kid Rock stopped by a restaurant early Sunday after their show, and a male customer recognized a female in Rock's entourage. Words were exchanged, and a fight ensued, the station reports.

After police were called, the singer's tour bus was pulled over, and he and the members of his entourage were arrested. In addition to Rock's arrest, the male customer also has been charged with a felony for allegedly smashing a window of the restaurant.

According to FOX, Kid Rock posted bail and was released Sunday evening from DeKalb County jail, signing autographs on his way out.

They did have "The Guy Who Changes the Lightbulbs" on the box. About half the songs were Waffle House songs. That was new too me.

While eating at a place called The Snackery on Oakton St in Des Plaines with my dad I learned not to sit too close to the food prep area. Sometimes you can see too much. Although, sneezing wait staff always makes me want to leave a restaurant.

And, Kid Rock seems like a Waffle House kind of guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
